Reasons to study Spanish!

If your aim is to learn Spanish, it seems that now is a better time then ever.

Interest in learning Spanish is growing for many reasons:

1. Spanish is the third most-spoken language in the world after Mandarin and English. Around 500 million people speak Spanish in the world. In fact, it is one of the languages considered as a ‘language of the future’ after it was stated that the Spanish-speaking population had grown by 60% over the last 10 years in the USA. And in Europe, its influence has increased by it being placed as the second language after English in the education system and after it being defined as the official language within many international organisations including the United Nations.

2. Of course, learning a second language has obvious advantages when people think about travelling, whether it is for leisure or for work… It is all so much easier when we know the language of the host country.

3. In the work environment, there is no doubt that an array of professional opportunities become available with the knowledge of foreign languages. In the case of Spanish, these opportunities are offered by speaking a language that is the first language for 350 million people in 21 countries and through the fact that Latin America is currently experiencing an economic boost.

4. In terms of culture, learning Spanish means having first-hand access to an immense cultural background, enjoying the great literary tradition of this language with writers such as Gabriel García Márquez or Isabel Allende, which to this day continue to top the lists for the most sold books and which receive the best literary reviews.

5. Personally-speaking, everything is an advantage. Learning languages means in some way becoming closer to other cultures. And this is highly rewarding on a personal level. At Closeteachers, we are more than convinced about the validity of these reasons and many others.

What is sure is that the offer of Spanish schools in Spain is huge. But our advice is that if you want true immersion, stay away from the most touristic places and choose places with charm and which are slightly alternative. It is about choosing a school that combines language classes with cultural activities that allow you to discover the city and get to know other students to exchange experiences with.
