Gerona’s old town is medieval and Romanesque structures, as well as buildings with Hebrew and Arabic influence. The outer walls of the Old Town are named the Forca Vella. It is situated between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, which means you can visit a multitude of nearby destinations, as well as enjoying the regional gastronomy which combines recipes that use ingredients from the mountains and the sea.
In Gerona, the Cathedral is a must see. Its Roman origin gives it a fortress like appearance as well as a strategic location. Its gothic arcs are striking. Inside you will come across some beautiful textiles of Catalan/Romanic origin, such as el Tapiz de la Creación.
El Call, is a collection of small narrow streets that make of the Jewish Quarters of the city. Forca Street is the centrepiece of this area, along with the Synagogue and centres of cabalistic studies. The Plazas of Oli and Vi maintain their original style, and in them you can find some of the jewels of medieval palace architecture, such as La Fontana d’Or.
Currently, El Call is one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Spain. Not far from the centre, a capuchin convent is home to the Arabic Baths.
On the other side of the river we come across some of the most beautiful examples of Catalan Modernism by Rafael Masó. Some of the highlight buildings include La Fábrica Teixidor and La Casa de la Punxa, among others. The Hospital de Santa Caterina, also nearby, was constructed in Baroque style in the 17th century. On the other side of the Paseig Devesa, local recreation areas include the Parc Devesa.
Gerona is known for being situated on La Costa Brava, on the strip between Portbou to the north and Blanes to the south, an area which hosts an abundance of medieval religious buildings, fishing villages, Roman ruins, beaches and coves with transparent water and cliff faces. Places such as El Port de la Selva, with the monastery Sant Pere de Rodes, the Parque Natural Cap Creus and the Cadaqués landscapes are a must see. The Gulf of Roses and ancient walled precincts along the seafront, such as Tossa del Mar, are also highly recommended.
During your stay in Gerona you must get to know the regional cuisine. The combination of coastal and inland products creates fabulous recipes in the form of caceroles, charred vegetables with almonds or chorizo and peppers and, various rice and fish dishes. Grilled fish, chicken, lobster even rabbit with chocolate represent some of the local specialities. Crema Catalana, custard with warm sugar on top or apple tart are some typical desserts.
