Cádiz is one of the most picturesque and historical cities in Spain. It has always been cosmopolitan; its commercial links with the Americas are easy to spot.

The Cathedral is a must visit; its golden tiled dome makes it particularly visible from the sea. Its unique local style also lends from Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It is one of the most appreciated cathedrals in Spain.

The defensive walls of the city are also a must visit, with forts that used to protect it from pirates and corsairs over centuries. The Old Town is made up of narrow streets and small plazas. Popular areas include La Viña, el Mentidero, Santa María (the home of flamenco music) and El Pópulo. The area of El Pópulo, the oldest in the city, conserves medieval parts of the city. We also recommend that you visit Oratorio de San Felipe Neri which was the seat of the 1812 Cortes de Cádiz, where the first Spanish constitution was drafted.

Cádiz is also the perfect place for leisure and partying. The Carnival of Cádiz is when the city’s residents and visitors poor out onto the streets, dress up and enjoy singing and music. In March/April the Holy Week is celebrated, where you will observe colourful baroque imagery and lavish figures paraded in the streets. In May a major motorcycling event takes place each year in Jerez, where you can also visit the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian

Art and see the Carthusian horses dancing. The province also offers concerts, water parks, cinemas, casinos and great sports facilities. You will also find a wide selection of bars, theatres and flamenco venues.

The gastronomy is also one of the principal attractions in Cádiz, including tapas, fish and seafood. Zorrilla Street is one of the best places to enjoy tapas, as well as excellent wines from Jerez. Cádiz is also home to several lovely beaches which are great for water sports and sun bathing.

In summary, Cádiz offers incredible culture, nature, leisure and gastronomy, which makes it ideal for a Spanish course.
