Vigo is a beautiful place to visit. It is situated in the Rías Bajas and is the best place to enjoy the Ría de Vigo and the Islas Cíes, which are both part of the broader Parque Nacional de las Islas Atlánticas.
In Vigo, you come across rustic houses, with important historic buildings and impressive gardened avenues. The old part, la Cidade Vella, is in the old fishing area of O Berbés, near to the port. In this area you also come into contact with the porches of the Plaza de la Constitución, fishing streets and emblazoned houses. In this labyrinth of narrow streets, where the houses normally have glass balconies, the Colegiata de Santa María and la Concatedral de Vigo-Tui are two of the highlight structures. They are neoclassical in style and were built on the remains of a gothic church, burnt by English privateer, Sir Francis Drake.
Also in this area you can visit the Market of Pedra, a unique place where you can taste Galician oysters. The most modern part of Vigo has a triangular layout between Puerta del Sol, Colón and Urzáiz.
You will find forests and recreational areas dotted between the remains of forts from the primitive settlement, as well as the tenth century ruins from the Castle O Penso.
Following the footpaths in the fishing villages of Cangas and Moaña, as well as travelling across to the Cíes Islands are both highly recommended. The Cíes belong to the Parque Nacional de las Islas Atlánticas; its steep cliff faces and dunes are home to thousands of bird species. The route from the Ría de Vigo passes through historic villages such as Baiona.
From Vigo one can visit the nearby city of Pontevedra, as well as places such as Combarro, Sanxenxo and Portonovo to enjoy the excellent beaches, as well as the Islands of Ons. As you can imagine, the Vigo´s gastronomy is quite delicious. Las Rías Baixas bring hake, turbot and seabass to the table. In terms of seafood, oysters, clams, mussels, barnacles and cockles are in abundance. The beef steak and Galician potatoes are also outstanding.
