Seville is the fourth largest city in Spain, in terms of inhabitants. It is located on the river Guadalquivir. Its architecture demonstrates a palpable Arabic legacy. Each of the narrow streets and plazas in its Old Town has charm. They are home to an interesting selection of unique buildings and areas such as Triana and La Macarena, both of which have a special atmosphere.
The Cathedral, Royal Forts and the Indian Archive are a group of must see monuments. The Royal Forts are located around a ninth century Arab castle. The ancient walls enclose wide open spaces, gardens and romantic patios. The city’s gardens have both Arab and renaissance influences. The Indian Archives are home to Spanish renaissance art. It is one of the most important documentation centres related with the conquest of America. Visits to the baroque façade of the Royal Tabaco Factory, the University, the Palace of San Telmo, the Park of María Luisa and the Plaza de España are all recommended. In this area one can also come across interesting structures to do with the Latin American Exhibition which took place in Seville in 1929. On the outskirts of Gaudalquivir you will find the Tower of Gold (Torre de Oro), which formed part of the ancient Arabian city walls. We also encourage you to visit one of the most emblematic bullrings in Spain; the Real Maestranza de Caballería.
The area of Triana is picturesque and well known. We also recommend the Island of Cartuja, which hosts centres such as the Monumental Collection of Cartuja and the Centre of Andalusian Contemporary Art.
Another good reason to come to Seville is its fiestas. The festivals of Easter Week and the April Fair both reflect the tradition and folklore of the people of Seville. They have a reputation for being particularly welcoming and friendly with visitors.
Seville is a synonym for excellent gastronomy. Perhaps the best way to get to know the local gastronomy is touring the Old Town and areas such as Triana and Macarena, enjoying the tasty tapas on offer. The variety of tapas available is mindboggling; nevertheless, we do recommend a cool beer as an accompaniment, or a fine wine or manzanilla from Jerez. Lastly, if you go to Seville during the summer, don’t forget to ask for a refreshing and tasty gazpacho.
Seville is also a great place for shopping, from sophisticated items in boutiques to artisan objects. From workshops to markets and commercial centres; Seville offers every kind of shopping opportunity. Some of the best places include the Casco Antiguo, Triana and Nervión.
