In 1893, the princess María Luisa, who had always expressed a love for Seville, made a donation to the city and a park was built in her honour. Today, the park is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain, with its landscaped gardens, leafy surroundings, ponds and plazas.
Located on the edge of Parque Maria Luisa, the Plaza de España was designed and constructed under the direction of Anibal Gonzalez, one of Seville's most famous architects. Visit the plaza during the day, or better still, at night-time, when the square's fountains are lit up, creating a panoramic setting. Browsing Seville at your leisure provides a fantastic opportunity to take in the scenery and architecture. Although it is surrounded by arid landscapes, the centre of Seville is very lush and green, with many shaded gardens and parks, both in the palaces and around the city, which are not only very beautiful but also provide a retreat from the intense and sometimes oppressive southern climate. Be wary of visiting Seville in the summer. the temperature, sometimes topping 40°c in July and August, can be too much for those not accustomed to it.

From Flamenco to jazz, the Córdoba Guitar Festival promises to be a great event just a short train ride away in the city of Córdoba. Keep this in mind, there are always good flamenco guitarists to catch during the two or so weeks of the event.
Above all, Seville is perhaps most famous for its activities during Semana Santa, or Holy Week, over the Easter period. Starting on Palm Sunday, there are processions throughout the city. On Good Friday, there are parades starting at dawn, whereby cofradías carry statues of the Virgin which are adorned with flowers and velvet shawls, along with sculptures of Jesus, which are covered in red carnations. All the processions are accompanied by chapel music played on bassoons, oboes and clarinets, which walk behind the parade.
