Santander is an excellent place to take a Spanish course and immerse yourself in the local culture, as the city itself has some fantastic Spanish courses on offer. The city of Santander is internationally renowned for its pristine beaches, excellent golf courses and elegant charm. Situated on the northern coast of Spain, it is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful bay areas in the world. If you're looking for beaches, Santander has plenty to offer, with La Magdalena and Los Peligros as two of the most popular.
Santander is also a great place to get closer to nature with its stunning national parks. From Peña Cabarga, visitors can enjoy views of the whole of the Cantabrian region and the Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno is home to the largest range of animal and plant species in Europe. The Cueva El Soplao is well worth a visit for its breathtaking natural beauty. In addition to this, the natural park Dunas de Liencres is home to of the great dune ranges of the Cantabrian coastline that houses rich flora and fauna.
There are a number of interesting sites in the city. These include the Festival Palace, the current site of the prestigious Santander International Festival, The Museum of Archaeology, which includes various prehistoric finds, including some of the most valuable in Europe. Finally, the Cantabrian Maritime Museum, one of the most complete museums in Spain dedicated to the sea, discovers various aspects related to the Cantabrian Sea: marine biology, maritime history.
The Mataleñas Golf Club is located alongside El Sardinero beach, boasts excellent facilities, and the course is suitable for advanced players and beginners alike, and there are classes available for all levels.
If you´re visiting Santander, especially in the summer, be sure to check out the regional festivals. El Día Infantíl de Cantabría on the first Sunday in June, which features many interesting local traditions, including the aluche, a typical Cantabrian fighting match.
In Santander you can combine your Spanish course with a surfing or sailing course, so that you can learn the language while enjoying your favourite sport!
By plane -The airport is five kilometres away from downtown Santander and it has daily connections with Madrid and Barcelona, Frankfurt and London to name a few destinations. Please contact www.aena.es for further information.
By Train- There are trains to Santander from Madrid, and from here there are numerous connections to both national and international destinations, including Paris, Barcelona and Malaga. Please contact www.renfe.es for further information.
By Bus-There are many buses from Madrid, Bilbao, Hendaye/Irun, to and from Santander. For further information please contact www.alsa.es.
By Car- If you drive your own car or a rented car, you can arrive at Santander from the south (non-toll road from Madrid to Burgos, then follow a mountain road in good condition to Torrelavega and then pick the motorway up again to Santander). From the east (toll road between Hendaye and Bilbao, non-toll road between Bilbao and Santander). It takes about an hour to travel from Bilbao to Santander, or two and a half hours from Hendaye to Santander.
From the west (a good road close to the seaside between Oviedo and Santander, most of it a highway). Takes 2 1/2 hours for the trip Santander/Oviedo.
By Ferry- Twice a week, there is a ferry boat connecting Santander with Plymouth (UK). The trip lasts about 18 hours, and it is operated by Brittany Ferries.
