San Sebastián is an excellent destination to take a Spanish course. Close to the French border, it has great links with the TGV from France, so it easy to get to, and the beautiful beaches mean that you enjoy the sun after classes.
San Sebastián is a cosmopolitan city with a strong Basque character, which is clear in its cultural events. With its sweeping white beaches and pristine Neoclassical architecture, San Sebastián epitomizes elegance, making it an enchanting place to visit. The main streets of San Sebastián unfold overlooking the La Concha Bay. Monte Igeldo stands at one end of it, creating a wonderful vantage point for enjoying scenic views over the city. At its feet is Torrepea Point, where the "Peine de los Vientos", a sculpture by the famous Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, is installed. Here Ondarreta beach begins, framed by a serene garden area. This was the place chosen by Queen Maria Cristina to build the Miramar Palace, which would later become her summer residence. A lovely promenade with elegant railings and street lamps runs along La Concha Beach, which is home to a former royal bathing hut. Still looking at the sea, you arrive at the old Casino, which has been converted into the City Hall. This area is excellent for exploring the port and marina, and soaking up that seaside atmosphere.
In the oldest part of San Sebastián, you will find the churches of San Vicente and Santa María del Coro, the former built in a Gothic style and the latter in Renaissance-Baroque. An old Dominican convent is now home to the San Telmo Museum, whose archaeological and ethnographic collections, together with its paintings, are worth a visit. These busy streets lead you to the Plaza de la Constitución. Among its many balconies - numbered and painted white, betraying its origin as a bullring - stands the old Neoclassical City Hall, converted into the central library.
Amongst the wide range of cultural events on offer in San Sebastián, these include La Tamborrada, held in January. This is the feast of San Sebastian when the people of San Sebastian hit the streets to a crescendo of drum and barrel playing. The party starts in the Parte Vieja (Old Quarter) at midnight on 19th of the month when the city's mayor raises the city's flag in La Plaza de la Constitución.
Then the marching starts as adults dressed as cooks and soldiers follow drum playing bands around throughout the night. Most marchers represent one of San Sebastian's gastronomic societies, many of which only allow male members. In addition, its prestigious film and jazz festivals say a great deal about its international status. The Jazz Festival, which is held during the third week in July, and is Spain's most celebrated jazz music festival, including line-ups with international artists.
San Sebastián also is renowned for its creative and avant-garde cuisine. Popular places to sample the city's gastronomic delights are the pinxto (tapas) bars, serving small dishes.
