A small city at the heart of the Navarre region, Pamplona sits on a plateau 449 metres above sea level. With a mixture of traditional and modern features, and embodying a culture that is quintessentially Spanish, Pamplona is a great place to learn both the language and to experience the culture.
The Plaza del Castillo is the hub of the city. Today, it is used as the stage for the city's main events: bullfights until 1844, battles, tournaments, markets, military parades, political and popular demonstrations.
Many of the narrow lanes of Pamplona's Historical Quarter stem off from this square, and is surrounded by a collection of old houses dating from the 18th Century. The Plaza is also a typical meeting place for locals, filled with bustling restaurants and cafés.
The Museum of Navarre is Pamplona's finest museum. It is housed in the old Hospital of Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, opposite the Royal Palace, and marks the start of the hill of Santo Domingo. It contains archaeological and art collections related to the history of the Navarre region, with a set of mosaics and archaeological findings exhibited in the pleasant garden which faces the city walls. Also worthy of particular mention is the collection of ruins from the gothic monastery of Iranzu.
The Cathedral of Santa María is the city's most emblematic monument and the one which is home to the greatest number of historical and artistic treasures. It was built in the 13th-15th century at the site of an former Romanesque building and, before that, the Roman settlement of Pompaelo. The Cathedral boasts a mixture of different architectural styles, with a Neoclassical façade and Gothic interior features.
La Fiesta de San Fermín- Setting religion to one side, the Bull Run is the central event of the Fiesta of San Fermin and the one which has projected the image of Pamplona. All over the world, people have heard of the city where people run through the streets ahead of a herd of bulls. Live TV broadcasts of the event have but fed the legend and given it the international status it has today. The fiesta takes place between 7th and 14th July, and is exceedingly popular, with crowds of people turning out to watch.
