The city of Málaga represents a key holiday destination for people all over the world. With its wide sandy beaches, sunny climate and cosmopolitan lifestyle, Málaga has something for everyone, whether you come in search of history, culture or a bit of sun!
Thanks to its good weather all year round, Málaga has undergone a process of expansion and development in recent years. Towards the end of Franco's rule, the city attracted a lot of foreign investment from wealthy countries such as the United States. It was this injection of foreign capital which has created the Málaga we see today. The costas are lined with affordable beach hotels, water parks, golf courses and other tourist attractions, with a wealth of water sports activities available.
However, Málaga is more just a beach resort. The alcazaba, a striking fortress, sits on the top of a hill, and gives fantastic views of the city. This impressive building was once where Moors formed their government after seizing the city during the conquest of 711 and 1492. Gibralfaro Castle is also an important historical site. The name of this castle comes from the Arab word yabal (Hill) and another derived from the Greek faruh (Lighthouse), period as a coast lookout point.
A lush retreat in this bustling city, La Concepción gardens are widely regarded as some of the most beautiful tropical gardens in Spain and even in Europe. A visit to these gardens, situated five kilometres from the city centre, is an unforgettable experience, providing a stark contrast to the arid and rugged landscape that constitutes this region.
Málaga, like most Spanish cities, has its fair share of fiestas, including the procession of Virgen del Carmen, which takes place on 16th July, a festival which is most celebrated in those areas of the city with maritime history.
An image of the Lady Carmen is carried through all the fishing districts, and finally placed aboard a fishing boat decorated with flowers, which is then it taken out to sea, followed by a multitude of small boats. The summer months are a very important time for Málaga, as it celebrates the city being brought under the rule of los reyes católicos, or the Castilian monarchs, Fernando and Isabela, on 19th August 1487.
Andalusia as a region has a wealth of small towns and villages also well worth a visit. Take a bus to Mijas, Ronda or Nerja for a relaxing and cultural day out.
