Madrid, the Spanish capital, is a city that awakens the imagination. It is lively, cosmopolitan, and yet has a more traditional and authentic feel than many other tourist destinations in Spain. From the bustle of Gran Vía, you are just steps away from the Parque del Retiro, a secluded haven in the heart of the city, perfect for relaxing in the sunshine with a good book.

The Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid's most symbolic monuments. It was in 1778 that Carlos III of Spain ordered the construction of this monument and charged the architect Sabatini with its design and execution. The idea was to replace the old and damaged archway of the time with something more modern and dramatic. Located right in the heart of the city in the Plaza de la Independencia Square, it is located at one end of Calle Alcalá, very near the main entrance to the Retiro Gardens. Another major site of interest is the royal palace, also located in the city centre. This beautiful palace offers visitors insight into the lifestyle of the Spanish royal family over the centuries, with ornately decorated rooms and furniture, and a spectacular view from the palace gardens. Wandering at your leisure is possibly the best way to explore Madrid. Browse the stores on Gran Vía, or relax with a coffee in the Plaza Mayor, there is plenty to be seen in this fantastic city.

As mentioned previously, el Parque del Retiro, is not to be missed on any visit to Madrid. It covers 118 hectares, and has a serene and detached feel despite its very central location. In the capital alone you will find other parks including Campo del Moro, El Capricho garden, Monte de El Pardo, the Botanical Gardens and Juan Carlos I park.Meanwhile, outside the city are the internationally famous Aranjuez Royal Gardens, which are also well worth a visit.

The Museo del Prado, which was opened as a painting and sculpture museum, holds the most complete collection of the world of Spanish painting from the 16th to 19th centuries, including works by El Greco, Ribera, Velázquez, Murillo and Goya. If you're more interested in modern art, then the Museo de Reina Sofia might be just what you're looking for. The museum is home to the famous Guernica painting by Picasso, a dark and poignant depiction of the bombing of Guernica, a small town in the Basque Country, by nationalist rebels during the Spanish Civil War.

Our Spanish schools offer Combined Courses which allow you to learn Spanish while trying out different leisure activities and sports. There are countless excursions and cultural visits which our schools include in their timetable so that students can make the most out of their trip to Madrid by allowing them to get to know the city and the region itself. Just a short drive from the city centre, there are several major monuments to visit and explore, such as The Valley of the Fallen, (Franco's famous monument to fascism,) the Escorial monastery, Aranjuez and La Granja. In addition, you can try out sports such as skiing, horseriding and hiking in the surrounding mountainous regions.
