Situated at the foot of Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range of the Iberian peninsula, the city of Granada enjoys a beautiful location. With more than a thousand years of recorded history, this relatively small city is known one of Spain's most important cultural and architectural centres. Besides the Alhambra, the world renowned Moorish palace and fortress, and its Albaicín quarter, which both listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, Granada boasts a Renaissance cathedral dating from the 16th century and many other important monuments.
Notably, the city of Granada is most famous for its spectacular Alhambra Palace. This vast and beautiful monument sits on the top of a hill, offering panoramic views of the city. The Alhambra was a palace, a citadel, fortress, and the home of the Nasrid sultans, high government officials, servants of the court and elite soldiers from the 13th to the 14th century, when it was under Moorish occupation. Today, the monument is divided into four main areas: the palaces, the military zone or Alcazaba, the city or medina and the agricultural centre of Generalife. The site itself is surrounded by beautiful woods and gardens.
San Cecilio is the patron saint of Granada dating from 1599, when a plague devastated Granada and, according to the local myth, was saved by San Cecilio.
A pilgrimage in celebration of San Cecilio takes place on the Sunday closest to February 1st in the Sacromonte neighbourhood, around the Abbey of the same name. The views, the cave-houses and greenery give the area its character. In the run-up to the day of the festival, there are many religious and military celebrations.
Due to its location in the mountains, Granada is also a great place to explore the countryside. The Sierra Nevada National Park, which is only a short drive away, provides a fantastic opportunity to see some of the local flora and fauna and the mountains are popular amongst snow-boarders and skiers during the winter months.
