As the largest city in the North and the most up and coming city in Spain, Bilbao is a city that has plenty to offer. Known historically for its role as a major trading port, in recent years, Bilbao has grown out of its industrial past and has been redefined as a bustling cultural centre. The new Guggenheim Museum is becoming increasingly recognised as an international landmark, and each year more and more people flock from all over the world to see the compelling art collections that are housed here. The exhibitions change seasonally with a variation of very interesting and unique works. The Guggenheim Museum is located next to the Museo de Bellas Artes, the third largest in Spain, which makes it ideal for the contrast between modern and traditional art.

In addition, as the capital of the Biscay province, Bilbao is the perfect base to experience a different side of Spain. Unlike the southern provinces, the Basque Country is a lush, green area set in the mountains, and is excellent for trying out new adventure sports, such as climbing, horse-riding and paragliding. Although the city has a history primarily as an industrial port, there are some coastal beaches nearby which are very popular amongst surfers and sailors alike. Bilbao is famous for its pinxtos (Basque tapas) bars, which offer the perfect opportunity to sample some of the regional specialities.

Bilbao is not a tourist resort. Instead, when you come to Bilbao, you can expect to experience a taste of the ´real´ Spain. It is an ideal location to learn Spanish because it is also one of the places where the language is spoken in its ´purest´ form.

Don't forget that if you come to Bilbao during the summer months, there are beaches located very close to the city, which are especially popular amongst surfers, but are also great for water-sports. You can combine your Spanish course with a course in surfing or sailing. Our Spanish school in Bilbao offers different activities and courses so that you can learn Spanish and enjoy new activities and sports at the same time!

When visiting Bilbao, be sure to experience the festivals that take place throughout the year. The Festival of San Juan, on 23rd June, celebrates the summer solstice, and Aste Nagusia, or Semana Grande, which takes place in August, is a huge festival involving around 400 musical and theatrical acts and fireworks displays. Bilbao is also up and coming as a cultural hotspot. The city has several theatres and concert halls, including the Teatro Arriaga and Palacio Euskalduna, cinemas, and an opera season. Recent shows at the Arriaga include performances of The History Boys, and a colourful and original show by the Saõ Paulo National Contemporary Ballet.

Bilbao is known for its excellent cuisine, love of wine and the wide range of restaurants and tapas bars. You too can learn more about the local gastronomic culture by participating in the activities that our language school has to offer, including cookery courses and wine tasting events.
