Barcelona offers everything you could possibly want from a city. From its stunning architecture, sweeping sandy beaches, buzzing nightlife and countless street performers which line Las Ramblas, Barcelona is constantly electric with life. Whatever your interests, you can be sure that Barcelona can provide you with what you´re looking for. First and foremost, Gaudi´s famous architecture is not to be missed. With numerous important examples dotted throughout the centre, these can be visited as tourist attractions, or you might simply choose to admire them whilst taking a stroll through this beautiful and mystifying city. Such examples include the Sagrada Familia, a giant church which is universally regarded as his greatest work, the Park Guell, an enchanting park which is home to the architect´s old house, and Casa Batlló, famous for its creative and enigmatic structures and designs.
The Poble Espanyol is a small Spanish village made up of different quarters that replicate the architectural styles from various regions of Spain. The village is also home to a whole host of specialist craft shops and workshops, perfect for picking up some authentic Spanish goods to take home.
For an alternative to the works of Gaudi, visit the Picasso museum. The paintings featured here are displayed in chronological order to illustrate the various stages of the painter´s career, depicting the individual style which he is remembered for today. When in Barcelona, one of the best things you can do is wander around the city, browsing the different areas and streets. Las Ramblas are an absolute must for a taste of Barcelona´s contemporary street culture, with its markets and street performing acts, which range from miming to break-dancing.
The Festival of Sant Jordi (St George´s Day), is possibly Catalonia´s most famous festival. Paying homage to Sant Jordi, the patron saint of the region, it is a day for celebrating Catalan autonomy. In 1926, Sant Jordi's Day was first made to coincide with the Book Day to mark the birth of Miguel de Cervantes and the deaths of Shakespeare and Josep Pla.
