A Coruña, in the region of Galicia, is a beautiful place to visit. With sweeping, unspoilt beaches, rich culture and breath-taking countryside, Galicia is renowned for its natural beauty, which remains largely untouched by the influx of tourists to the Spanish coasts.
In the Old Town, there are three important churches. The first of these is one of A Coruña's oldest buildings, the Iglesia de Santiago, which dates from the 12th Century. Also, visit the Iglesia de Santa Maria del Campo, which also dates from the Gothic period, along with the Convent of Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo contains a chapel dedicated to the patron Saint of A Coruña, "La Virgen del Rosario". This convent is not as old as some of A Coruña's other buildings, but it is still worth a visit and is only a short distance away from the other two churches. The Tower of Hercules is a lighthouse, which was built by the Romans when they occupied Spain. The lighthouse stands on an area above ground level a short distance from the centre of A Coruña city. This imposing tower faces the Atlantic Ocean and offers panoramic views of A Coruña and the surrounding area. It is one of the city's "must-see" attractions.
Galicia has a wealth of buildings featuring a range of architectural styles found in Europe, from Romanesque and renaissance through to Baroque and Neo-Classical. However, the region is also renowned for its unique balconies known locally as 'galerias'. A galería is a balcony which is enclosed in a glass frame to protect it from Galicia's cool winters so that it can be used throughout the year. The vast number of galerías in A Coruña explains why it is often referred to as 'the glass city.'
Without question, Galicia has some of the most scenic beaches you are ever likely to see. Whether you prefer golden brown or bleached white sand, crashing waves or lagoon retreats, the coast line of Galicia has plenty to choose from. The Spanish schools offer Combined courses with surfing courses so that you can improve your moves on the waves and you can book your course through Closeteachers.
The galego cuisine is very unique and you'll certainly want to sample different regional dishes if you're visiting A Coruña. Try the pulpo braseado or bacalao al Pil-Pil, and be sure to visit the town's fish markets to get a real flavour of the local area. We organise excursions and activities so that you can simple some of these local delicacies.
