Santiago de Compostela, a beautiful city in the north-west of Spain, represents an important place of pilgrimage for people all over the world. The capital of Galicia, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Santiago de Compostela is the perfect place to immerse yourself in Spanish cultural traditions.

First and foremost, Santiago's famous cathedral is not to be missed. This impressive building forms the nucleus which the rest of the city has been built around. It is this famous monument which attracts tourists from all over the globe to Santiago de Compostela. It is believed that this is the burial place of Saint James the Greater, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ, and now serves as the final destination of the Way of St. James, or el Camino de Santiago, the famous pilgrimage.

The city is home to several museums of interest, including the Museo do Poblo Galego (The Museum of the Galician People), and numerous religious museums providing visitors with background information on the city's heritage.Santiago is the site of the University of Santiago de Compostela, established in the early 16th century. The main campus can be seen best from an alcove in the large municipal park in the centre of the city. Within the old town there are many narrow winding streets full of historic buildings. The new town all around it has less character though some of the older parts of the new town have some big apartments in them.In its green surroundings, Santiago de Compostela also provides a good base to explore the beautiful Galician countryside. The city is popular with walkers, but a whole range of sports is available, including golf, biking and rafting in one of the nearby rivers.

The most important fiestas in Santiago de Compostela are, without a doubt, those centred around the July 25th Festival, Día de la Patria Galega y Día del Apóstol Santiago (Galicia Day and the Apostle St. James's Day). The last fortnight of the month sees a mix of popular fiesta with the religious and the political, with the city council putting together an extensive cultural and entertainment programme including exhibitions, theatre, street entertainment, and a full range of concerts to suit all tastes, many of which are held in the Plaza del Obradoiro and Plaza de la Quintana.

Santiago de Compostela is known for its vibrant university life, which makes it an ideal location to take a Spanish course. Its night-life and lively bars and restaurants make it one of the most exciting cities in Spain. Of course you can also choose to combine your Spanish course with cultural activities and excursions, or simply visit the local restaurants to sample some of the delicious local cuisine.
